Do you ever feel a bit scattered? Things pulling you in too many directions? Does an excursion through your email sometimes take you off on a two hour distraction journey, researching this or that interesting but ultimately irrelevant tidbit all over the net?
For many of us, aren’t our entire lives lived like that, where it seems almost impossible to get focused, find our priorities and then stick to them, and make any headway? We get to the end of the day, and it feels like having gone through a whirlwind, but what did we really do?
A quick perusal through the “time management help” area of google, showed me the just the kinds of solutions I was expecting. And they are good solutions, and we all should get better at them. Solutions such as, make a list (and check it twice), get into a routine, finish what you have started, make priorities and do things according to it, just say no.
I like all these things, I have heard them, I have tried to do them, and I am not the best at them. But really isn’t that the outside? Isn’t the reason why a person finds it hard to focus is because they aren’t really focused (on anything worthwhile)? My contention is that the reason why people have trouble sticking to priorities is that they have no inner priorities that are driving them.
Have you ever been on fire? Have you ever done something, where you just KNEW it was the right thing because you couldn’t wait to do it; it was like your body was naturally humming as you went about your day, and as you thought about all the possibilities that could open up as the result of your efforts, and not just for yourself?
You see I maintain that true motivation, and hence true time management comes from a vision that opens up before you of how the world might change for the better, because of your unique knowledge and gift to the world. Whether we know it or not, we seem to be heading into a time of transition.
The old way of forming yourself into an more and more impossibly difficult world, so that you could maintain your status, and eat your bread, might be in its closing days. And the thing of it is, as this OLD world continues to roar on outside the window in a more and more distracting fashion, we must learn to find a different way to prioritize life.
What is it that you are called to do, what integrates the chaos and reaches down to all that you have ever studied, that secret dream that kept repeating in one corner of your mind, while you trudged through on the endless path? If you could actualize your dream, how would you feel, would it fire you up? Would it help change things around you? Would you be doing your part?
If you can find even of wisp of any of these things, you are on the way to discovering your inner motivation. When you are truly on YOUR path, things will naturally prioritize themselves, you will not even be much interested in the distractions, they will start to fall, for something more juicy will be in their place.
